Why Buenos Aires?

Buenos Aires, the city of seven hills

TThe Autonomous City of Buenos Aires is the capital of the Argentine Republic. It is located in the central eastern region of the country, on the western bank of the Río de la Plata estuary, in the pampas plains. It has an estimated population of almost 3 million, with 12 million in its urban conglomerate, known as Gran Buenos Aires, which makes it the country’s largest urban area, the second in South America and the southern hemisphere, and one of the twenty biggest cities in the world.

The City of Buenos Aires has strategic importance, both nationally and regionally. It is the main financial, production and educational center in the country and it is the heart of Argentina’s cultural and intellectual activity. Its most distinctive features are: its theaters (the city has the largest number of theaters in the world); its music, with tango, and its traditional gastronomy, in which asado and mate stand out.

The City, like the whole country, has a public system of hospitals and educational centers. In addition, it has a public transport network of buses, subway lines and interurban railways, as well as an airport and a harbour.

Cafe Tortoni

A famous cafe located at number 825 on Avenida de Mayo , Buenos Aires , Argentina . Opened in 1858 by a French immigrant named Touan. The name comes from another cafe, located in Paris on Boulevard des Italiens , where the nineteenth-century elite of the city gathered. Inspired by Fin de siècle cafes .

Address

Avenida de Mayo 825

The experience

Lovely historic setting and nice ambience, stained glass windows and Tiffany lamps adorn the place, summarizing the elegance of the 18th century

la poesia cafe front picture

La Poesia

Originally founded in 1982 by journalist and poet, Rubén Derlis, La Poesía became a place for the artists and thinkers of Buenos Aires to contemplate democracy after the end of Argentina’s military dictatorship.

Address

Chile 502

The experience

Housed in a turn of the 19th century building, the cafe preserves the traditional tiled floor and dark wood bar. The shelves are lined with books and artifacts and an upstairs wall is packed with black and white portraits of some of Buenos Aires’ notable artists and literary figures.

los angelitos cafe front picture

Café de los Angelitos

The café started in 1890 as a meeting place for singers and dancers, it was the main meeting place for socializing until 1920. From 1912 Carlos Gardel was the main character of the place. After many bad times and crisis, the place closed in 1992, and it was abandoned, until it was bought and brought to life in 2007.

Address

Av Rivadavia 2100

The experience

1920's feel, with a big theater like scenario where normally people can go to listen tango players and watch dancers while having a traditional argentinian meal.
